E.T.: THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL, 1982. Original ET Bike over the Moon rolled 1 Sheet (27 x 41″) movie theater poster for sale starring; Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore, Peter Coyote and director Steven Spielberg. A classic film that won 4 Oscars and helped define a generation of people all across the world. This poster is thought to have been designed solely for the cast and crew to the film and is why it is so rare and only with a few hundred known copies in existence. The infamous scene of Elliott’s bike flying across the moon is one of the most classic images from the film and along with the rarity, is why this poster is so collectible and valuable.
There are three very popular posters versions for this film that are topic known amongst collector’s and fans; this version, the “bike over the moon” which is considered one of the rarest and most valuable, the Advance version which is considered the most valuable poster version and the standard 1 sheet, released with the film.
This poster is notoriously difficult to authenticate. Be very aware of the number of reproductions of this poster. This poster is guaranteed authentic; however one can make some observations about the reproduction which makes it slightly different from this original and hard to authenticate.
How to Authenticate the “Bike Over the Moon” ET Movie Poster
– The reproduction has less blue light coming through the trees. Just to the right of the “T.” is a good example (see figure)
– print quality in the reproduction is slightly darker
– Paper weight (reproduction is a lot glossier and less heavy)
– Poster Size (There are many variation to the original poster size, but anything greater than half an inch size variation off of 27 x 41 should be suspect of forgery.)
This particular rolled 1 sheet “Bike over the moon” for E.T. the Extra Terrestrial is in very fine to near mint condition. There are no major defects to note. However, it does have waviness that would smooth out during linen backing and there is a nick to the artwork to the left of the moon. A minor touch up here would make it virtually untraceable. Outside of these blemishes this poster is in spectacular condition.
