Directed by Vincent Minelli who, the following year married Judy Garland created one of the most memorable of musicals of all time with songs such as Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. The film was a much needed tonic to the Americans at home and the troops fighting in WW2 and became one the of highlights of Garland’s career. She was at her best playing one of four sisters growing up in an ideal Victorian house on a charmed street in Missouri and who falls for the boy next door all the while singing some of the most memorable songs of her career.
