GRISELIDIS MASSENET, 1901. Original Linen Backed Poster (30 x 55″ / 98 x 140cm) for Griselidis, an Opera by Armand Silvestre (1837-1901) and Eugene Morand; music by Jules Massenet (1842-1912); performed at Theatre de l’Opera-Comique in Paris, 1901; Illustration by Francois Flameng (1856-1923). This poster is a prime and popular example of turn of the century art.

This stunning poster is in very fine condition and has been linen backed with only minor wear along edges and 2 pin holes at top and bottom center margin.

Linen Backing a poster on canvas requires three essential elements; Linen which is marketed as Cotton Duck:, acid free Japanese Lining paper and a Wheat starch solution containing an alkali buffer which when used together provide a stable acid free environment for mounting a poster.

Linen backing is first and foremost a preservation and stabilization technique. It preserves the integrity of old and valuable paper and assures the poster can be safely handled and displayed.
