JAPAN (Geisha), 1960s. Original Vintage Japanese Travel Poster (23 x 39” / 74 x 128 cm); printed in Japan by the Mitsumura printing company. This image was originally painted by Uemura Shōen (1875 – 1949), who was an important and well-known female artist in Japan; primarily known for her bijinga paintings of beautiful women in the nihonga style. The original title of this image is “Jo no Mai” (Noh Dance Prelude) and was inspired by the Noh theater; Jo-no-mai is a dance performed in the introduction of a Noh play. This poster is rare and was printed for the Japan National Tourist Organization; but later this image was used in advertisements by Swissair and Japan Airlines (JAL).
This poster features a strong feeling of majesty, with a large central figure, a Geisha, against an empty background. The artists’ use of color is carefully planned to the light surfaces of clothes and other items will stand out prominently against the negative space.
This original poster is rolled, never folded, and in good C8 condition with beautifully saturated and crisp colors with incredible detail. There is some wrinkling near top and bottom of poster due to rolling the slightly thicker paper used in these posters. The only other flaw is a small brown-colored stain in bottom right hand corner – please click on image to zoom in and review for yourself. We highly recommend that this poster be Linen Backed to preserve the poster’s beautiful colors and condition while virtually eliminating the wrinkling. Please contact us for this service, it is an additional fee of $80.
