MERRY WIDOW, 1934. Original Half Sheet (22 x 28” / 56 x 71 cm) folded movie poster for the 1962 Re-Release of the movie. Stars Maurice Chevalier and Janette MacDonald; produced and directed by Ernst Lubitsch. In this film, considered by many to be among MacDonald’s best performances McDonald plays as a wealthy widow named Sonia, who is the main tax-payer (52% of the taxes) of the kingdom of Marshovia. Being responsible for more than half of the country’s taxes, Sonia fleas to Paris and takes her money with her; which could be disaster for the tiny country. Chevalier plays as Count Danilo, a playboy who is ordered by King Achmet of Marshovia to court and marry Sonia to win back her allegiance and restore the nation’s prosperity.
