FOOD, KEEP THE HOME GARDEN GOING, Original WW1 U.S. Food Administration Poster

FOOD, KEEP THE HOME GARDENS GROWING, 1918. Original (20 x 30” / 66 x 98 cm) Linen Backed U. S. Food Administration Poster designed by William McKee. Herbert Hoover, who later went on to become President during the depression, organised the government, under the Food Control Act of 1917, to purchase food for the war in Europe. After the end of the war his efforts continued and supplies went towards feeding the millions of displaced and homeless during the reconstruction period.

This poster is often compared to the Spirit of ’76 artwork designed by Archibald Willard during the Civil War and no doubt this was intentional as McKee entitled this poster The Spirit of ’18.

Some soiling to the upper margin – a small chip of missing paper was replaced in the upper right corner during linen backing.
