Directed by Vincente Minnelli and produced by Arthur Freed. Music by George Gershwin. American in Paris is one of the most grandiose, elegant, and most celebrated musicals of all time. The opulent costumes and sets, marvelous Technicolor cinematography, and a romantic story for the ages set to George Gershwin’s music is a recipe for a timeless classic. Two immortal song numbers Love is Here to Say and I Got Rhythm were both written by Gershwin.
The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, and won six of them. American in Paris was only the third musical to win Best picture, and was the first to win the Golden Globe award for Best Motion Picture. The overwhelming critical and commercial success of this movie proved that Gene Kelly will be forever remembered for more than just Singin’ in the Rain which was released just five months later.
