MEN WANTED FOR THE ARMY, 1918. Original US WW1 Poster (30 x 42” / 98 x 138 cm) originally rolled and now linen backed. This is an original chromolithograph WW1 army recruitment poster created by Michael P. Whelan c.1910. This poster was one of a group of four posters designed by this artist for the army recruitment effort.

Originally rolled and now linen backed, this poster is in very good C8 condition with only minor wear along the margins with light paper loss before we backed it. One the finest examples we have handled from this series

Linen Backing a poster on canvas requires three essential elements; Linen which is marketed as Cotton Duck:, acid free Japanese Lining paper and a Wheat starch solution containing an alkali buffer which when used together provide a stable acid free environment for mounting a poster.

Linen backing is first and foremost a preservation and stabilization technique. It preserves the integrity of old and valuable paper and assures the poster can be safely handled and displayed.
