COLE BROS. GREAT GRIMES HIGH WIRE, 1941. This original circus poster measures 27″ x 41″ (88 x 135 cm) It was originally rolled and is now linen backed. Erie Litho. & PTG. Co. Erie, Pa. No 41-490-5-C. “Undisputed Champions of the High Wire, Who Have Made Two Continents Gasp” Featured on the poster is The Great Grimes, a daring high wire act. It shows two men riding bicycles on a high wire, with a pole across their shoulders that supports another man balanced on a chair with a woman perched on his shoulders.
The Cole Bros. Circus was founded in 1884 and was operated under several under owners and variations until it closing in 2016. Notably, the show starred famous animal trainers, Clyde Beatty, and one of the most well-known circus clowns, Bob Strehlau (Juggles the Clown).
