QANTAS – JAPAN, 1959. Original Vintage Linen Backed Australian Travel Poster (15 x 20” / 48 x 64 cm) designed and illustrated by artist Harry Rogers (1919-2012). Rogers was an Australian born who studied animation at UCLA California, which was reflected in his designs for the Qantas posters. He produced posters for the airline as a freelance designer from the 50’s to the 70’s. He had a very geometric and collage-like style, utilizing bold colors and a singular, readily identifiable central image for the country or region each poster represented. This poster is part of a series for Qantas, an Australian’s Overseas Airline, that was considered a very successful campaign.
This poster features an iconic image of a geisha draped in a colorful printed costume holding a fan. Flying above her high in the sky is a depiction of the Boeing 707 aircraft that Qantas had just introduced to it’s carrier services in 1959. The background is a very vivid and bright, almost neon yellow.
Before this poster was linen backed, it was in good original rolled condition with only a very small tear in the top middle and minor wrinkling due to the slightly thicker paper used for these particular advertisements.
