QANTAS – PACIFIC ISLANDS (Polynesian Outrigger Canoe), 1959. Original Vintage Linen Backed Australian Travel Poster (15 x 20” / 48 x 64 cm) designed and illustrated by artist Harry Rogers (1919-2012). Rogers was an Australian born who studied animation at UCLA California, which was reflected in his designs for the Qantas posters. He produced posters for the airline as a freelance designer from the 50’s to the 70’s. He had a very geometric and collage-like style, utilizing bold colors and a singular, readily identifiable central image for the country or region each poster represented. This poster is part of a series for Qantas, an Australian’s Overseas Airline, that was considered a very successful campaign.
This poster features a male Polynesian native dressed in typical island attire, including a lei around his neck. Flying above him high in the sky is a Boeing 707 – introduced to Qantas airlines in 1959. The native is paddling an outrigger canoe through an endless sea of a beautiful aqua-marine-blue color as the background.
Before this poster was linen backed, it was in good original rolled condition with only a very small tear in the top margin and some wrinkling throughout due to the thicker paper used for these particular advertisements. Please click on image to zoom-in and review for yourself – the tear and wrinkling have all virtually disappeared after our linen backing process was completed.
