THE TIDAL WAVE, 1918. Original US WW1 Poster (20 x 28” / 66 x 97 cm) originally rolled and now linen backed. Designed by artist Joseph Clement Coll (1881-1921), an illustrator who’s pen and ink work was characterized by achieving tonal gradation by using pen strokes, rather than darker colored ink, as seen in this propaganda poster. Issued by the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation on July 4, 1918 – 95 Ships Launched into the first World War.
This poster which is seldom seen features newly built ships cresting a high ocean wave, with soldiers on horses sketched into the waves crashing over top – as to represent the U.S. dashing into the battle; also featured is an eagle grabbing for prey toward bottom of image.
Originally rolled, this poster was in ok C6 condition prior to Linen Backing. This poster has some chips along the border and has undergone some aging but overall, is over 100 years old and looks great now following linen backing and restoration.
Condition C6. For Sale $475 Linen Backed
