LE THERMOGENE, 1930s. Original French Advertising Poster (29 x 39” / 102 x 154 cm) originally folded and now linen backed. This iconic image of a fire-breathing clown holding the cloth product over his chest was designed by Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) for Le Thermogene. This product was a heating-pad-like product that is composed of soft cotton wadding, treated with capsicum, a blistering agent that is the product’s active ingredient that activates when applied to apart of the body where heat would be beneficial. The poster reads, “Le Thermogene. Engendre la Chaleur et Combat: Toux, Rhumatismes, Points de Cote, etc.” which translates to “the Thermogenic. Generates Heat and Fights: Cough, Rheumatism, Side Points, etc.” Cappiello’s design was praised by poster aficionados of the time and actually increased product sales to record highs. The company continues to use this trademark logo on their products to this very day.
This poster was originally rolled and in very good C8 condition prior to linen backing. The following quality issues were addressed and fixed during our Linen Backing process: minor wear and cracks along top left corner margin and bottom right corner margin.
