The first official film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe features the world-famous playboy industrialist and master engineer Tony Stark who initially builds a mechanized suit of armor to escape terrorist captivity. He goes on to create a more polished, technological suit that would land him the Iron Man title.
After cycling through Universal, Fox, and New Line Cinema since 1990, the Iron Man film rights returned to Marvel Studios in 2005. The project launched as Marvel’s first self-financed production, distributed by Paramount Pictures. Although director Jon Favreau signed on in April 2006, he faced intense opposition from Marvel when casting Robert Downey Jr. due to the actor’s past legal troubles. Despite all of the opposition RDJ would ultimately become the anchor of the MCU.
