SPIDER-MAN, 2002. Original 1 Sheet (27 x 39.75” / 89 x 131 cm) rolled Movie Poster starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and Willem Dafoe. Directed by Sam Raimi, and written by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. This poster was released prior to September 11th, (911, 9/11) 2001 and was promptly recalled after the national tragedy due to the reflection of the Twin Towers in Spider-man’s eyes. Another reason for the recall was the studio failing to get permission from Chrysler to feature their building in the design of the poster.
There are three variations of this poster: the International Style contains only “2002” at the bottom, the domestic version contains “Coming 2002” or “3 May 2002”. These posters were printed both as double sided and single sided. This poster is single sided.
The principal technique for authenticating this poster is identifying in the a yellow taxi in the lower left quadrant of the poster. On the original the cab is almost fully visible but on the fakes the roof is missing and only the tail end of the cab is visible. Also keep an eye on the level of gloss. An original is highly glossy. This poster is in near mint condition and would make an excellent addition to any Marvel fan’s collection. This poster cannot be reliably linen backed due to the high gloss finish applied at the printers.
